🌺 ColombiaCartagena
Cartagena is the Caribbean at its most colorful: a walled colonial old town of bougainvillea-draped balconies, plazas full of music, fresh ceviche, and boats to white-sand islands offshore. Romantic and sun-drenched.
Where to stay
Walled City (Centro)
The historic core — pastel colonial mansions, churches, and plazas inside the old ramparts.
Getsemaní
The artsy, lively quarter just outside the walls, full of street art, music, and nightlife.
Bocagrande
A modern high-rise strip along the beach, with hotels and a Miami-like skyline.
San Diego
A quieter pocket of the walled city with leafy squares and boutique hotels.
Don't miss
Walk the city walls at sunset
Stroll the ramparts as the light turns gold and end with a drink at Café del Mar over the sea.
Get lost in Getsemaní
Umbrella-strung lanes, murals, and Plaza Trinidad, where the whole neighborhood gathers at night.
Boat to the Rosario Islands
Clear Caribbean water and white sand a short boat ride offshore; pick a beach club or a quieter caye.
Ceviche and Caribbean cooking
Fresh seafood, coconut rice, and arepas; grab fruit from a palenquera in the square.
Castillo San Felipe
The hilltop Spanish fortress with tunnels to explore and a commanding view of the city.
Sunset over the bay
A short rumba boat cruise or a rooftop bar to watch the sky and skyline light up.
When to go
December–April is the dry, breezy high season. May–November is hotter and wetter with short downpours, but quieter and cheaper.
Good to know
Is Cartagena safe for tourists?
The old town and Getsemaní are generally safe and well-touristed; use normal city sense, watch for pushy vendors and overpriced taxis, and agree fares in advance.
Are the city beaches good?
The in-city beaches are average; the real payoff is a day trip to the Rosario Islands or Barú for clear water and white sand.
How many days do I need?
Three to four: a couple for the walled city and Getsemaní, plus an island day and time to slow down in the heat.
When is the best time to visit?
December to April for dry, breezy weather. It's hot year-round, so pack light and plan around the midday sun.
