🥘 SpainValencia
Valencia is Spain's underrated gem: the birthplace of paella, a futuristic arts complex in a drained riverbed park, a buzzy old town, and a wide city beach. Sunny, relaxed, and great value.
Where to stay
Ciutat Vella
The old town — the cathedral, the Central Market, and tapas-filled Barrio del Carmen.
Ruzafa
Hip and creative, with the best brunch, cocktail bars, and a famed local food market.
City of Arts & Sciences
Calatrava's white, sci-fi architecture along the old riverbed, with an aquarium and science museum.
El Cabanyal & the beach
A tiled fishermen's quarter beside the broad Malvarrosa sand and seafront paella restaurants.
Don't miss
Eat paella where it was born
Have the real thing — rabbit and bean Valenciana — at lunch near the beach or out by the Albufera rice fields.
City of Arts & Sciences
Wander the gleaming complex, catch the Oceanogràfic aquarium, and come back to see it lit at night.
Cycle the Turia Gardens
A 9 km park in a former riverbed loops the city — rent a bike and ride from old town to the arts complex.
Mercado Central
One of Europe's great food markets under a Modernista dome — go hungry for jamón, cheese, and horchata.
Sunset on the Albufera
A boat across the lagoon and rice paddies just south of the city, glowing at dusk.
Beach afternoon at Malvarrosa
Wide golden sand a tram ride from the center, lined with chiringuitos for a long lunch.
When to go
March–June and September–October are warm and comfortable, with the wild Fallas festival in March. Summer is hot but beach-ready; winters are mild.
Good to know
Is Valencia worth visiting over Barcelona or Madrid?
It's quieter, cheaper, and more relaxed, with a beach, the best paella in Spain, and standout architecture. Many travelers prefer it for an easygoing few days.
Where should I eat paella?
At lunch, the local main meal, and ideally near the beach or out by the Albufera. Authentic Valenciana uses rabbit and beans, not seafood — that's a different dish.
How many days do I need?
Three is ideal: one for the old town and market, one for the arts complex and Turia park, and one for the beach and Albufera.
When is the best time to go?
Spring and autumn for warm, comfortable weather. Visit in March for the spectacular (and chaotic) Fallas festival.
