Trip expense splitter
Add who is on the trip, what was spent and who paid, and get the few payments that settle everyone up. Free, no sign-up, and nothing you type leaves your browser.
1. Who is on the trip?
Add everyone who shares costs. Names stay in your browser.
2. What was spent?
One row per bill. Say who paid and who shares it. Leave the shares even, or switch to unequal shares when use differs.
3. Who pays whom
- "Expense" needs an amount above zero.
Add an expense with an amount and who paid, and the settle-up appears here.
How the split works
- Each bill is cut into shares that add back to exactly what was spent, to the cent, so nothing is lost to rounding.
- Each person's balance is what they paid minus their shares. Positive means they are owed money; negative means they owe it.
- The biggest debts are matched to the biggest credits until every balance is zero, which takes at most one payment fewer than there are people.
A worked example
Four friends share a house and a car, $1,000 in all. Sam paid $700 and Jo paid $300, so each share is $250. Sam is owed $450 and Jo is owed $50; Alex and Priya each owe $250. Alex pays Sam $250, and Priya pays Sam $200 and Jo $50. Three payments, and everyone is square.

Questions
Is the trip cost splitter free?
Yes. There is nothing to sign up for and no limit on how often you use it.
Does it save or send what I type?
No. The numbers are worked out in your browser and are never sent to us. The only thing that keeps your split is the address of this page: copy the link and anyone who opens it sees the same split.
How does it work out who pays whom?
For each person it adds up what they paid and subtracts their share of every expense. Anyone left with a positive balance is owed money and anyone with a negative one owes it. It then pairs the biggest debts with the biggest credits, which never takes more payments than there are people minus one.
Can I split a bill unevenly?
Yes. Choose who shares each expense, and tick unequal shares to give people more or fewer parts: a guest who stayed four of five nights, or two adults and a child sharing a meal.
What about different currencies?
This calculator works in one currency per split, so enter everything in the currency you agreed to settle in. For several currencies on one trip, Ollin's expense splitting supports multi-currency on Pro.
Is the answer the fewest possible payments?
It is a short list that always settles everyone to the cent, but finding the absolute minimum is a hard problem and this does not claim it. For a group of friends the two are almost always the same.
Keep the costs beside the plan
In Ollin the expenses live on the trip they belong to, split evenly or by share, with settle-up for the whole group.
